The N.C. Humanities Council has awarded TWR $9,000—the full amount requested—for Together We Read Homegrown 2008. NCHC has been a critical and vital supporter of TWR through the years, and is to be credited as much as anything else for the success of our popular and, in ways, path-breaking program. Thanks to NCHC staff and board members. Visit www.nchumanities.org, and click “People.” |

This exhibit, created by Together We Read, features photos and stories from Western North Carolina's immigrant community, including young Latina mothers participating in the Mother Read program at the Family Resource Center at Emma. Through TWR’s oral history program, participants have shared stories about what drew them to journey to America, the struggles they have encountered, and the dreams that remain. Photos include portraits of the interviewees and snapshots taken by the speakers. The interviews were conducted with people who have relocated to Western North Carolina from Ghana, Latvia, Mexico, the Philippines, Ukraine, Cambodia, Ecuador, Chile, Spain, and Iran.
Immigration: A Journey Through Pictures and Words is a traveling exhibit available for display in a business, school, church, or gallery. For information about booking the exhibit please contact Rebecca Williams, Oral History Coordinator- Together We Read 828-686-3922 serpentchild@earthlink.net
